Private Eyes:
The Iron Mantis

2020, Illustration

I was contacted by a friend and writer, Keith Hodder who was writing on a show, Private Eyes. He asked if I would be interested in doing some art for an episode featuring a comic book as they wanted someone who could pull off a “classic comic style” and of course, I was happy to do it—plus my parents watch the show, so If I could impress them somehow I was in.

Below are are the designs for the characters as described by the show’s Art Department. The two were to be classic golden age characters, so I got my Jack Kirby on and pulled inspiration from characters like Ant-Man, Magneto and both Black Widows. Originally the character Tara Antula was to be her own heroine before she was sadly turned into a generic damsel.

While designing the characters I had to come up with some cover poses as well as the interior of the comic for the scenes they would be featured. Below are the roughs to finals before it went to the art department to add text and final touches.

Finally, below are some stills of the actual episode the final comic was featured in.  The images also ended up being used elsewhere in the episode including signage around a building featured in the episode.
